Seneca Lake

2024 Pinot Gris

About this wine

Hand Picked from Sawmill creek on September 28, 2023. The vineyard crew rigorously hand sorting the fruit as they picked The fruit was hand sorted for a second time in our cellar. The winemaking team paid special attention to select the highest quality fruit given to us from the vintage. The wine was whole cluster pressed, and settled in stainless steel tanks. Following settling it was transferred to neutral Acacia barrels. We used a combination of barrique and large format barrels. It was fermented for 3 months in the barrels at low temperature to encapsulate aromatics. The wine remained on lees to add texture and body to the wine. It was kept in barrel until it was bottled in Spring 2024.

Vintage Notes

Due to the relatively mild winter leading up to the start of the 2023 growing season. This vintage saw unseasonably early budbreak. The growing season started two weeks early in our vineyards. This led to increased chance of ripening, however it opened up the possibilty of frost damage. While frost’s hit, the vineyard site was well protected against damage. The remaining fruit saw temperatures in line with the ten year average. A dry September and cooler nights led to ripe wines with a bright acidity and intense fruit flavors.

Vineyard & Soil

Sawmill Creek is one of the iconic vineyards of the Finger Lakes. This Farm was planted in 1852 and has been farmed for 7 Generations by the Hazlitt family. Located right across the street from our tasting room, this 70 acre site highlights the terroir of the finger lakes. The vineyard rocky shale and limestone soils slope towards the lake. The grapes have full exposure to the warm afternoon sun, leading to increased ripeness and varietal typicity. The Pinot Gris block was planted in 1993, This site features deep soils based around Lansing gravelly silt loam. This soil type is based around Limestone and Shale that is common to the Finger Lakes. Located 800 feet from Seneca Lake, this proximity to the lake creates a more acidic linear wine. This tension created between the ripeness provided by the soil and the acidity provided by the lake are a hallmark of this wine.
